TAX PRO PTIN UPDATE
November 4, 2010 – 4:08 pmOnline PTIN System Update: The IRS’s Online Tax Professional PTIN system is again available, with over 75,000 PTINs already issued through the new system. All paid preparers must apply for or renew their PTINs by January 1, 2011. The IRS is mailing over 1 million notices to existing PTIN holders (125,000 each Wednesday) reminding them to renew their PTINs.
Enrolled agent enrollment and fees: Until further notice, renewal for EAs with TINs ending in 4, 5, or 6 is delayed. Announcement 2010-81 indicates that the reason for the delay is so that the IRS can effectively implement a new fee schedule for EAs. The EA renewal fee isexpected to be substantially reduced in coordination with the new required PTIN fee.
