RELIEF FOR PREPARERS WHO HAVE PENDING PTIN APPLICATIONS

February 16, 2011 – 3:00 pm

All individuals who are compensated for preparing, or assisting in the preparation of, all or substantially all of a tax return or claim for refund of tax must have a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). The IRS recognizes that some tax return preparers are experiencing or may experience difficulty in obtaining a PTIN. In such cases, the IRS said it would permit any tax return preparer receiving either a notice from the IRS that the IRS was unable to process their online PTIN application, or an acknowledgment of receipt of the paper PTIN application, to prepare and file tax returns or claims for refund for compensation after the tax preparer complies with all instructions provided in the notification or acknowledgment letter.

All tax professionals should continue to check on their PTIN application status with the IRS by calling the PTIN hotline at 877-613-7846. To validate their personal authentication data with the IRS to assist with online issues, call the IRS Practitioner Priority Service line at 866-860-4259.
