Your Input Crucial On Knowledge Base

April 1, 2012 – 12:25 pm by

The RedGear Knowledge Base (KB) has been put to good use. Customers searching for answers via this tool sky rocketed.

We want the numbers to keep growing—so we’ve added a new feature that will allow you to rank the effectiveness of the KB article you referenced.

At the top of every article is a set of five gears. To rank an article, simply click the number of gears you would rank the related document; one gear being the lowest and five gears being the highest.

Anytime a KB document is rated low (two gear’s or less), a survey will pop up asking for additional information to help us make improvements to the article.

If you haven’t used the knowledge base, it can be accessed from the ‘Help’ menu in the software.

The knowledge base is an effective tool to find quick answers for many of your software and tax related questions. Your input will help us improve this valuable tool.

First ‘Registered Tax Return Preparer’ Test Results Are In

March 13, 2012 – 3:53 pm by

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that it has begun providing test results to tax return preparers who have taken the new return preparer competency test. Those who pass the test and a tax compliance check will be given a new designation: Registered Tax Return Preparer.

Since the test became available in November 2011 it has been in a calibration phase as the IRS validated the test questions and set the passing score. This phase has now ended. The 120-question test has a perfect score of 500. Preparers must score 350 or higher to receive a passing grade.

All individuals who have taken the test to date were recently sent a letter from the IRS informing them whether they passed or failed. Those who pass the test must still pass a tax compliance check performed by the IRS, which will generally be completed within a couple of weeks after the test score is issued. Those individuals passing both the test and the tax compliance check will be sent a Registered Tax Return Preparer certificate. Only those tax return preparers who have received a Registered Tax Return Preparer certificate may call themselves Registered Tax Return Preparers.

The test is part of a larger IRS effort to ensure competency and professional standards in the tax preparation industry. All paid tax return preparers must obtain and annually renew a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Certain return preparers must also complete 15 hours of continuing education annually, pass the one-time competency test by Dec. 31, 2013, and pass a tax compliance check.

Certified Public Accountants, attorneys and Enrolled Agents are exempt from the new continuing education and testing requirements because they already have separate requirements. Also exempt are non-signing preparers supervised by CPAs, attorneys or Enrolled Agents and those who do not prepare the Form 1040 series.

Although preparers have nearly two years to take the test, the IRS encourages them to complete the requirement as soon as they can.

Preparers with a testing requirement can schedule the test by accessing their PTIN account at IRS.gov/ptin. The test can be taken at more than 260 sites and the test fee is $116.

Preparers can find more details about the test at IRS.gov/taxpros/tests. There are helpful resources available such as a Candidate Information Bulletin, which provides a list of recommended study materials; a test demonstration; and a video of what to expect on test day.

Testing will be suspended for a two week period beginning April 1 and resume on April 16, 2012. Those taking the test on or after April 16th will receive immediate test results at the test center after completion of the test.

Special Enrollment Examination remains unchanged.

The process for individuals to become an Enrolled Agent remains unchanged. Most Enrolled Agents have passed a comprehensive three-part IRS test (the Special Enrollment Examination) covering individual and business standards and representation rules. Enrolled Agents also must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years.

More information on the Special Enrollment Examination and the Registered Tax Return Preparer Competency Test is available at www.IRS.gov/taxpros/tests.

IRS Provides Failure to Pay Penalty Relief for Unemployed Taxpayers

March 8, 2012 – 4:19 pm by

The IRS will grant a six-month grace period (to October 15, 2012) from the 0.5% failure-to-pay penalty for unemployed taxpayers who meet certain guidelines. This is part of an expansion of the “Fresh Start” initiative and is available to taxpayers who have been unemployed for 30 days or longer.

In addition, the IRS is doubling the dollar threshold for taxpayers eligible for Installment Agreements to help more people qualify for the program. The maximum term for streamlined installment agreements has also been raised to 72-months from the current 60-month maximum.

E-File Volume Increases

March 7, 2012 – 4:19 pm by

The IRS implemented a new mandate this year requiring preparers to e-file all returns if you prepare ten or more 1040 returns.  To date, the IRS has seen an increase of 3.3 million e-filed returns.

Though the IRS experienced some bumps along the road the first of the season, the IRS has been pleased with the MeF and CADE2 processes.

As preparers, you are seeing much faster acknowledgements, and taxpayers are also beginning to see faster receipt of their refund.

We appreciate your participation in the MeF program.

Things to Know About Bartering

March 3, 2012 – 4:07 pm by

In today’s economy, small business owners sometimes save money through bartering to get products or services they need. The IRS wants to remind small business owners that the fair market value of property or services received through bartering is taxable income.

Bartering is the trading of one product or service for another. Usually there is no exchange of cash. However, the fair market value of the goods and services exchanged must be reported as income by both parties.

Here are four facts on bartering :

1. Organized barter exchanges A barter exchange functions primarily as the organizer of a marketplace where members buy and sell products and services among themselves. Whether this activity operates out of a physical office or is internet-based, a barter exchange is generally required to issue Form 1099-B, Proceeds from Broker and Barter Exchange Transactions, annually to their clients or members and to the IRS.

2. Barter income Barter dollars or trade dollars are identical to real dollars for tax reporting purposes. If you conduct any direct barter – barter for another’s products or services – you must report the fair market value of the products or services you received on your tax return.

3. Tax implications of bartering Income from bartering is taxable in the year it is performed. Bartering may result in liabilities for income tax, self-employment tax, employment tax or excise tax. Your barter activities may result in ordinary business income, capital gains or capital losses, or you may have a nondeductible personal loss.

4. How to report The rules for reporting barter transactions may vary depending on which form of bartering takes place. Generally, you report this type of business income on Form 1040, Schedule C Profit or Loss from Business, or other business returns such as Form 1065 for Partnerships, Form 1120 for Corporations or Form 1120-S for Small Business Corporations.

For more information, see the Bartering Tax Center in the Business section at www.irs.gov.

ArkWorks Tip: Transferring Software Activation

March 1, 2012 – 4:07 pm by

We often get support calls from customers who need to de-authorize a computer that previously had ArkWorks installed on it, and would like to activate that seat on another machine. To accomplish this, follow these simple instructions:

To deauthorize a computer, open the ArkWorks program.  From within the program, click on the Tools menu and choose “Administration.”

In the Administration Window, click on the “Deauthorization” tab.  This action will disable the ArkWorks program on that machine.

For customers using security within ArkWorks, you must be logged into the program as an administrator to de-authorize a machine they.

The screen shown above lists all pc’s authorized on the account. To deauthorize only the computer currently being used, click “Deauthorize This Computer.” Otherwise, if logged in with administrator access in ArkWorks, highlight one or more of the computer names in the list and click “Deauthorize Selected Machines.” This will free up unneeded program seats for another computer.

If you are looking for further information or instructions on other aspects within Arkworks, please visit our online knowledge base.  Information within the site ranges from basic usage to trouble shooting.
